June 22. 2003 - Es becomes usual or what? | Please send your comments/reports/log-sheets/audios to DK5YA

Again and again - 2003 ist THE season! MUF was very high from early morning both above southern France and the north-african coast line. Extreme short skip took place at 0845 from EA1 to EA3 on 50 MHz, a good sign for 144 Es. At 0900 UT broadcast from both Italy and EA was very strong in G and PA0 up to 108 MHz. We had two clouds being active. One at northern Spain/southern France and another one above south-west Mediterranean sea. First sigs on 144 MHz at 09:41 when EA5 was into GW. And the big opening started. A good idea from the boys in CN8 to be that active today, many made a new DXCC. And several G and PA0 had luck with 7X too (not me again...Ed.) while a few I4 and I5 made EA8 in JL18. At +-1200 UT we had another high MUF cloud in the east, BC from TA and SV in DL and Russian TV at 97 MHz booming for 2 hours. Nil on 144. Your guess thats all? Wrong! The show started again at 14:45 UT - same place same cloud. Again an huge opening from DL, PA0 and G to EA, EA9, EA8 and 7X. Interesting: EA6 made SV9 too! Your guess thats all? No! At 17.21 the band was open again, now from 9H1 and IT9 to north-west France and from EI to Italy with booming signals again!. All in all: More than 6 hours of 144 Es today, wow!
Involved DXCC: G, GM, GI, GW, EI, F, ON, PA0, OZ, DL, OK, OM, OE, HB9, HA, S5, 9A, I, IS0, IT9, 9H1, 7X, EA, EA6, EA8, EA9, CT, CN, SV9

Es with a lunch break :0)
This was my best Es, ever. Ok, I know I said the same a few weeks ago, but then it was true. So is now.
-Morning
Although I arrived about half hour late, it was a good morning. Es was very much like last year (August, 11): same DXCC chronologic sequence (F, ON, PA, G), same grids and, in several cases, the same stations! It was like a flashback. The only diference was signals comming from the East (I, IS, S5, EA3) at the same time, always strong (I8MPO was 59 from 1040 till 1140z). In total were 48 QSO (3 not completed. From those unfinished QSO's 2 were from the same station, who managed to complete the QSO on the
3rd attempt. The other station managed to complete the QSO on the "after lunch" period :o) That represented 13 new Grid and 1 new DXCC (IS0) for me.
-Afternoon
Unfortunatly I had a meeting for lunch, so I had to leave.
By then I was 30 minutes late, but the band was closed ;0)
However, as soon as I could, I returned home, expecting more... I don't know if it was a feeling or a hope. Anyway, 5 minutes after I arrived to the shack, the "show" begin, again! WOW. What a blast!
It was a (nearly) continous pile up for more than an hour!!!
Despite deep QSB and the fact the signals weren't as strong
as in the morning, I managed to do 92 QSO (9 were not complete but, like earlier, several worked me on another atempt).
DXCC: DL, OK, F, PA and OZ for a new one! Plus 12 new grids.
In conclusion: this was a memorable day. Exactly what I need after losing the 16th June Es. (I was at office all the time)
Working conditions: FT-847 (50W) + Tonna 17 elem yagi
After 1200z I turn the "brick" on, and boost the output to 200w.

Once again a patchy opening here with lots of ups and downs. Best was EA4LU who was audible for long periods. It paid off to concentrate for new squares. I was lucky to catch three new ones and only missed the forth with EB7COL. Also never copied EA8, as usual.

Again a nice ES opening here in Bavaria. However, it was sometimes unusual. I copied CT1HBZ at least 20min fullscale, but all other stations were mostly weak. Further on it was nice to realize that most traffic was off from 144.300. So I think more qso's were possible.

Seems that my qth was not really involved in the huge ES today. Signals went in/out vy fast, no chance to complete a qso. In first opening signals were max 53 here (EA9IB).
Second opening much better, but lot of chaos. Hrd many - wkd few.  only hrd: EA9IB, EA7AG, EB7COL, CT1EAT, EA4DTX, EA4LU, EA7WM, EA4CTF, EA1DKV, EA4EOZ, CN8LI? (not sure, too weak) and more...

Es is not so good in my qth this year so far. The guys in G-land must be very lucky ;-) This morning I watched the band from 10.20 UT till 13.00 but only heard CT1DRB (10.32UT) and CT1FOH (10.47UT) with 53 report only.
When I returned into the shack at approx 16.45, I heard a spanish station in local chat. After breaking in, I could complete a QSO with EA1DAX (IN53TH) with 59/59 at 16.56

Of course it was the best opening in the saison up to now, bust still a bit disapointed, bcse EA8 was not possible here (in JO22 they managed to work it!) Was a pleasure to meet all the VHF-DXers which we meet in our CT VHF expedition in 1995. Good to know so many of them are active nower days...

CT1DRB was very weak at that time but we were lucky to finish! For about a half hour CT1DRB was the only ES station here in JN58. Then I heared also CT1EKD and CT1DIN who came up to S9 for a very short period. And than came the scond opening, the best ever to CT:

Nice signals on 6m when suddenly I heard some EA stations calling sporadic on 2m. Strange aperture, with at least two clouds from my QTH, one to 9H (the workable one, but weak) and another one to G/DL. This one extremly
weak for me. Worked 9H and heard some I, G, DL, IS and 9H5ET. All recorded/worked again with FT817, 5 watts and turnstile antenna.
2nd opening:
Another sporadic this evening. Just like the one in the morning, weak signals, except some stations really strong. Worked DL & PA, heard DL, PA, OK. Working conditions FT-817, 5 watts and turnstile antenna.

The most outstanding of this opening was working SV9CVY in KM25 at the same time I was working into the UK, so there was a second cloud over IT9!...this year there are so many openigs that we can choose the direction we want to work...hi..hi It was also nice to work GM0EWX in IO67 for a new square (#499)

I was there around 10z when band opened to CT/EA9/CN for others , but the Es cloud was too close , could only hear CT in back scatter. This was a strange opening , at the same time guys from PA/DL and I1/2 f in jn13/23 were worked by CN/EA9 ( 2 clouds?).Short opening in the afternoon , much better for EA3's than here:
1620 GI1CET IO74AN 59-59

the " 144300 only" syndrom is a nuisance , I worked these 2 guys away from 300 , otherwise , no qso possible

Very patchy opening although over quite a long period.
Signals were never 59+ and lots of QSB.
Noticed that EA's had Es into Italy at same time as into G.
As has been said before please spread out, while people
are tuning others can be working and vice versa.

A friend of mine (ik4ade) decided to work on 2m, and I asked him for only new countries/squares. This means i worked only calls i was interested in (of course there was much more activity!) : So three new squares, country, one new field and new personal record...what more?

After a very long time of waiting the Es finally reached Eastern OE as well. A splendid opening, however the Contest in the neighbouring countries was very disturbing and unfortunately the stations keep stuck on or near 300, a few good exceptions excluded. CT1DYX calling CQ on 300
and qsy 280 was the best example. Pity that I had to leave at 1600Z.

At first I want to point out, that the discipline during such Es openings really becomes better. Observed stations calling on .300 indicating a working QRG up to + - 50khz, as well as from north and south EU. Es started here in JN78cj at lunchtime, but we have been on the very east border for Es. Then in later afternoon EA's where coming up, followed by CT's with big signals. Es was not too long in my
location compared to western EU, but better a little Es duration than nil.

very very bad behaviour of station in OK & DL.
